Clifford “Cliff” Boro

Cliff Boro’s own journey exemplifies the spirit of a “pathbreaker.” He began his finance career on Wall Street at just 17 years old, working as a full-time trader under legendary hedge fund investors Michael Steinhardt and George Soros while still in high school. This unconventional start set the stage for a dynamic career. In the 1990s and 2000s, Cliff co-founded and led multiple pioneering companies. He was the co-founder and CEO of KidZui (later Zui.com), a groundbreaking web browser for kids; the company was later acquired by Saban Brands in 2012. He also founded Internet Financial Network (which became Infogate), an early real-time financial news service that was acquired by AOL Time Warner in 2003. In addition, Cliff has held executive roles or founding positions at various tech ventures – from internet infrastructure to digital media – developing a reputation as a leader who can take ideas from inception to successful exit. For his work bringing safe internet experiences to children through KidZui, Cliff was honored as a 2011 “Champion of Change” by the White House, recognizing his positive impact on the community.

Today, Cliff continues to channel his entrepreneurial energy into helping the next generation of innovators. He now leads TurnTide Holdings, a venture studio focused on backing early-stage technology companies and mentoring young founders. As Managing Partner at TurnTide, he works closely with startups – providing seed capital, guidance, and mentorship – to turn daring

ideas into thriving businesses. (Previously, he co-founded The Team Group and Simplexity Venture Studio Fund with a similar mission of accelerating startup growth.) Cliff’s extensive background in finance, tech startups, and venture investing has made him a valuable advisor and “co-founder at heart” for many emerging companies. Over a 30+ year career, he has worn many hats – CEO, investor, board chairman, mentor – and helped numerous businesses grow from the ground up to successful enterprises. He thrives on innovation and isn’t afraid to challenge the status quo, a philosophy he enthusiastically passes on to those he mentors.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Clifford Boro is deeply committed to giving back and fostering community. He has a longstanding dedication to philanthropy and education. In fact, his decision to create the Clifford Boro Pathbreaker Grant stems from his belief in the power of individual purpose and the importance of supporting young people who pursue their dreams against the odds. Cliff actively mentors aspiring entrepreneurs and students, offering guidance drawn from his own unconventional path. He also contributes his time to several non-profit and community organizations. He serves on the Board of Directors of the San Diego Performing Arts League, supporting the arts in his community, and has been involved with other initiatives (such as Temple Beth El in La Jolla and Unscripted Learning’s “Connections” program for youth) that reflect his passion for creativity, education, and social impact.

On a personal note, Cliff is known for his approachable, down-to-earth style despite his many accomplishments. Colleagues and friends often note his enthusiasm for new ideas and his willingness to roll up his sleeves to help others succeed. He’s a big believer in lifelong learning and adventure. In his free time, Cliff enjoys sailing and boating – a hobby that speaks to his love of navigating uncharted waters – and even performs amateur improv comedy for fun. These personal interests highlight a key aspect of who he is: someone who embraces challenges, learns from every experience, and isn’t afraid to laugh and be creative.
